We rescued a very sick little Oscar from a farm when he was 4 months old. Together with the Vet we nurtured him until he was a very happy, thriving and trusting little pussycat who was not scared of anything. At 6 months he was allowed outside and something happened that turned him into a very jumpy cat who was suddenly very nervous of everything and everyone - except us.

He loved going out, he brought us lots of 'presents' but he was a changed cat - even towards friends whom he had known since small. He was particularly scared of men. When he was a year old, we got him 'Little Benji' a grey and white 'tiger cat' - actually his nephew, in the hope it would help Oscar. It did. Benji was the opposite of Oscar and was not scared of anything. They used to go out hunting/playing together. In '06 we went away for 7 days and put both cats into a cattery. On our return Oscar was suffering from cystitis and crystals in his urine caused by stress. It took a lot of hard work, but we got him sorted out and things were back to normal.

On 28th Dec '06 Benji got himself locked into a someone's house for a week while they owners were away. On his return home, dehydrated and weak, he was hit by a car and broke his hip. This prevented him from jumping over the 6 ft fence that separates us from our neighbour's garden. I found him dead on their side of the fence, just 3 feet away from us. I have never got over the feeling that if I had managed to find him a little earlier, he might have been saved. We had Benji cremated so that we can take him with us when we move.

Oscar went into a terrible depression when Benji suddenly disappeared and it took several months before he returned to normal, but he did. He used to spend most of the day inside sleeping next to my desk in his basket or in a ray of sunshine on my bed. Now and then he'd go and chase a squirrel in the garden and then lie on his chair in the conservatory. He used to go out at night. From 11 onwards when we went to bed, only to return at 03:00 in the morning to wake us to play with him the way Benji used to. We did. Then he'd go out again until 6 a.m. when he would return for his breakfast, followed by a satisfying sleep on Maryam's bed.
Except he did not come in at 3 a.m. on the 14th July '07, nor at 6 a.m. nor ever after.

"Oscar was our 'first-born' pussycat, our 'problem child' and although we adored Benji and we will never stop grieving for him, Oscar had been through so much that we were even more attached to him.
When he disappeared just 6 months after Benji, this double whammy really devastated us.
(My tears are falling onto my keyboard as I write this).
The house is so terribly empty without him and despite us doing everything to find him, we've never found him. I work from home and every corner in the house, every piece of furniture reminds me of him.
We plan to move at the end of this year and take Benji with us in his little urn, but unless Oscar has returned by then, we will have to leave him behind. Of course we will change our address with all the relevant people when the time comes, but it is a desperate thought.
